Imphal, 8th August. The Manipur government has condemned the circulation of a doctored audio clip falsely attributed to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, describing it as a deliberate attempt to undermine peace efforts in the state.
The audio clip, which includes offensive remarks against a community, has been widely shared on social media. In response, the police have launched an investigation to identify the source of the clip and its disseminators.
“The government has observed that a fabricated audio recording, misrepresented as the Chief Minister’s voice, is being circulated on social media,” stated a government spokesperson. “This malicious audio is intended to incite communal violence and disrupt the peace process that has been established through various initiatives.”
The ethnic violence in Manipur, which has resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced thousands since May of the previous year, involves clashes between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki-Zo groups.
The Manipur Police have pledged to thoroughly investigate the origins of the defamatory audio and take legal action against those responsible. The state government emphasized that restoring peace is a critical priority at this time.
