Imphal, 20th August. The Manipur government has condemned the circulation of a “doctored audio clip” of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, alleging that it aims to disrupt peace efforts in the state. This follows a report by ‘The Wire’ which claimed that the purported audio was submitted to the Commission of Inquiry set up by the Home Ministry.
The state government accused the spread of such misinformation as “anti-national” and intended to incite communal discord and undermine peace initiatives. The statement on Monday highlighted recent improvements in law and order, despite sporadic incidents of violence, including rocket and bomb shelling in border areas.
An FIR was filed after long-range projectiles were launched towards Bishnupur on August 10. The government plans to release evidence of insurgent activity, emphasizing ongoing investigations by agencies like the NIA.
The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) expressed outrage at the lack of action on the audio clip, which the group claims was shared by ‘The Wire’ on August 7.
The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur has claimed over 220 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 people. Tensions between the Meitei community and Kuki tribes continue to fuel demands for a separate administration.
The Manipur government has urged the public to disregard false information and support the peace process.
