Kolkata, 22nd August. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep concern over the alarming rise in rape cases across India.
Referencing data in her letter, Banerjee stated that nearly 90 rapes occur every day nationwide, calling the situation “horrifying.”
In her letter, Banerjee emphasized the urgent need for stringent central legislation and the establishment of fast-track courts to ensure swift justice for rape victims.
“This shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. It is our bounden duty to put an end to it so that women feel safe and secure,” she wrote.
The letter follows the recent tragic incident in Kolkata, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered during a rest break at a hospital on August 9. The case has sparked widespread protests and strikes by doctors across the country.
Banerjee urged the Prime Minister to consider comprehensive measures, including exemplary punishment for those involved in such heinous crimes and ensuring that trials are completed within 15 days.
She also noted the Supreme Court’s recent establishment of a National Task Force to recommend improvements in working conditions and safety for healthcare professionals.
