Kolkata, 28th August. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today dedicated the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) Foundation Day to the victim of a recent rape and murder case in Kolkata. TMCP, the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, commemorated its foundation day with a poignant tribute to the 31-year-old doctor who was brutally assaulted and killed earlier this month.
In a heartfelt message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee stated in Bengali, “Today I dedicate Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to our sister, whom we mourn the tragic loss of at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago.” She expressed profound condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the party’s commitment to seeking justice for her and for all women subjected to such horrific violence. “We are deeply sad,” Banerjee added, calling for swift justice and enhanced safety measures for women across the nation.
The brutal assault on the doctor, which occurred on August 9, has sparked nationwide outrage. Junior doctors across the country have protested by refusing to attend to non-emergency patients, demanding justice for the victim and improved safety protocols in hospitals.
Banerjee’s tribute came a day after significant unrest in Kolkata. Protests led by the unregistered student group ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ and the dissident state government employees’ platform ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’ escalated as demonstrators marched towards the state secretariat, Nabanna. The protests, characterized by intense anger, were met with police resistance including batons and tear gas. The ruling Trinamool Congress alleged that the march was supported by the opposition BJP, which has called for a 12-hour “Bengal bandh” in response to the police crackdown.
