Mahayuti Sweeps SC and ST-Reserved Seats in Maharashtra Assembly Polls

Mumbai, 25th Nov. The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, achieved a decisive victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections, securing 21 of 29 Scheduled Caste (SC)-reserved seats and 21 of 24 Scheduled Tribe (ST)-reserved seats. The results, announced on November 23, mark a significant gain for the ruling coalition.

This victory comes months after the Lok Sabha polls, during which the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alleged that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) intended to alter the Constitution and abolish reservations for SCs and STs.

Of the 21 ST-reserved seats won by the Mahayuti, the BJP claimed 10, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena secured six, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP took five. The MVA managed only three ST-reserved seats—two by Congress and one by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

In comparison, during the 2019 assembly polls, the NDA won 12 ST-reserved seats, while the UPA secured nine. The remaining three seats were divided among the CPM, Prahar Janshakti Party, and an independent candidate.

On SC-reserved seats, the Mahayuti won 21 out of 29 this year. The BJP took nine, the Shiv Sena five, and the NCP six. One seat went to Jan Surajya Shakti. The MVA won eight SC-reserved seats—four by Congress and two each by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP).

In 2019, both the NDA and UPA won 13 SC-reserved seats each, with smaller parties and independents claiming the remaining three. The BJP had secured eight SC-reserved seats, and its then-ally Shiv Sena won five. The UPA saw the NCP win seven and Congress six seats in the same category.

The Mahayuti’s sweep reflects its consolidated support base and the fragmentation of the opposition. This electoral performance could set the stage for further political realignments in Maharashtra.
