Amravati, 2nd Oct. In a controversial statement, Devendra Bhuyar, an Independent MLA from Maharashtra’s Amravati district, sparked outrage by suggesting that a “farmer’s son” must accept an “inferior bride” because beautiful women prefer marrying men with stable jobs.
The MLA, a supporter of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, made these remarks during a gathering in Warud tehsil on Tuesday while discussing the struggles faced by farmers.
Bhuyar stated, “If a girl is beautiful, she will not like a person like you and me, but she will opt for a person having a job (while choosing her husband).”
He further added that women deemed “somewhat less good-looking” often marry individuals with small businesses, while only those considered “at the bottom of the lot” would choose to marry a son from a farming family. He concluded by remarking that children from such unions also “lack good looks.”
The MLA’s comments drew sharp criticism from Congress leader and former Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Yashomati Thakur.
She condemned Bhuyar’s remarks as derogatory and called for accountability from the ruling party.
“Ajit Pawar and those in power should keep their MLAs under control. No one will tolerate such categorization of women. Society will teach you a lesson,” said Thakur, who is also an MLA from the same district.
