Mumbai, 9th July. In a significant pre-election move, the Maharashtra government has declared that higher education will be free for girls belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).
The initiative, expected to cost Rs 906 crore, allows female students to avail free education in recognized vocational courses offered through various educational institutions, including government and aided private colleges, polytechnics, and autonomous universities. However, students enrolling in private autonomous or self-funded universities are not eligible under this scheme.
Under the guidelines outlined in a government resolution (GR), female students from EWS, SEBC, and OBC categories with an annual family income of Rs 8 lakh or less are eligible. This applies to both new admissions and current students pursuing their education.
The announcement comes amidst preparations for the state assembly elections, drawing scrutiny from the opposition regarding funding sources for multiple new schemes aimed at women. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently unveiled several initiatives, including schemes for free cylinders, youth training programs, and financial assistance for women.
Responding to criticism, Chief Minister Shinde assured that adequate financial provisions have been made for these schemes, emphasizing their permanence and commitment to empowering women through education and welfare measures.
