Madras High Court Grants Interim Bail to Kunal Kamra Until April 7

Chennai: Comedian Kunal Kamra has been granted interim anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court until April 7. The court acknowledged Kamra’s argument that he faces threats to his life and, therefore, cannot approach a Maharashtra court for relief.

The Mumbai Police’s Khar unit had issued a second summons to Kamra on March 31, asking him to appear for questioning. The comedian approached the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail after multiple FIRs were filed against him in Maharashtra over his alleged remarks against Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Following his controversial comments on Shinde, Kamra has found himself entangled in legal trouble, with several complaints accusing him of making derogatory remarks. In response, he has sought legal protection from arrest while preparing to defend himself against these allegations.

Earlier this week, Mumbai Police issued a second summons to Kamra, demanding his explanation for referring to Shinde as a “traitor” in his latest stand-up video, Naya Bharat, uploaded on YouTube. Kamra had previously failed to appear on the initial date, with his lawyer requesting a seven-day extension. However, after his continued absence, Mumbai Police sought legal counsel and issued a fresh summons.

Officials also revealed that the investigation is not limited to Shinde, as Kamra has allegedly made satirical remarks about several other prominent figures. Mumbai Police continue to probe the case.
