Madhya Pradesh HC Issues Notice Over Doctors’ Strike on Aug 17

GG News Bureau
Bhopal, 17th August. The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday issued notices to the state government and others, demanding a reply within 24 hours regarding the doctors’ strike called for August 17.

The strike is in response to the alleged rape and murder of a woman medic at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as well as the subsequent vandalism of the health facility.

A division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf issued notices to the dean of Bhopal’s Gandhi Medical College (GMC), the Junior Doctors Association, and others after hearing a petition from Narsinghpur resident Anshul Tiwari, who challenged the strike.

The Madhya Pradesh government’s notice was accepted by the additional advocate general. The court also ordered that the notice to the Junior Doctors Association be delivered through all possible means, including WhatsApp and email. The next hearing is scheduled for August 17.

Last year, the court had directed that no doctors’ association in the state could strike without seeking prior permission.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency health services for 24 hours starting at 6 am on August 17. The protest is in response to the alleged crime at RG Kar Medical College, which occurred nearly a week before the hospital was vandalized on August 15. While routine OPDs and elective surgeries will be halted, essential services will be maintained, according to the IMA.

The IMA is also urging a swift, professional investigation into the incident and calls for those responsible for the vandalism to be held accountable.
