Gonda, 22nd July. Om Prakash Singh, a local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, was brutally attacked and killed in his home on Friday night in Gonda district. The police have booked BJP councillor Udaybhan Singh alias Lallan Singh, his three sons, and one other individual in connection with the incident.
Singh, aged 45, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by assailants who broke into his house in Raja Tola, Parsapur town. Following the murder, Singh’s body was subjected to a post-mortem and handed over to his family. On Saturday morning, Singh’s family staged a protest, placing his body on the road and demanding the arrest of the accused before performing the last rites.
Senior Samajwadi Party leaders, including Yogesh Pratap Singh and former MLA Baijnath Dubey, arrived at the scene to demand immediate and fair action. Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Radheshyam Rai and Colonelganj Police Circle Officer Chandrapal Sharma assured the protesters of swift action. Due to the escalating situation, additional police forces were deployed.
Based on a complaint from Singh’s wife, Neelam, an FIR was lodged against the accused. Neelam Singh alleged that Udaybhan Singh and his family had previously assaulted them twice, and her husband had been beaten up in these incidents. Despite filing complaints with the police, she claimed no action was taken due to political pressure, which she believes led to her husband’s murder.
Singh had contested the Nagar Panchayat elections for the councillor position on an SP ticket but lost to BJP candidate Udaybhan Singh. Neelam Singh stated that the lack of police action on prior complaints emboldened the accused, ultimately leading to the fatal attack on her husband.
