Thiruvananthapuram, 8th Nov. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala launched a massive grassroot level campaign against Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Tuesday, distributing pamphlets in households across the state, as simmering tensions between him and the front-led government over various issues appear to have reached a boiling point.
The pamphlets, distributed by Left leaders and activists in various districts under the name ‘Education Protection Society,’ alleged that Khan was acting as a tool of the Sangh Parivar and did not even have a basic understanding of the Constitution.
It also emphasized the importance of a mass public movement against Khan in order to protect the southern state’s higher education sector.
According to LDF sources, the distribution of pamphlets is part of a series of protests against the Governor planned by the Left Front in the coming days.
The Left Front also intends to hold a mass protest gathering with over 1 lakh people in front of Raj Bhavan here on November 15, they said.
M V Govindan, state secretary of the CPI(M), stated that protest meetings and gatherings would be held on college and university campuses throughout the state.
The protest convention, being organised in front of Raj Bhavan, would be unprecedented and not witnessed by the state capital in recent times, he noted.
“We can counter the political stand being taken by the Governor only with the support of the general public. So, a decision was taken to distribute pamphlets across the state to bring the issues to the people of the state,” he told the media in Thrissur.
Aside from the protest in front of the Raj Bhavan, thousands of people are expected to attend protest meetings and gatherings in all other districts on November 15.
“The Governor is taking a stand which is anti-constitutional and illegal. Our only demand is that his stand should be in accordance with the Constitution and prevailing laws,” the leader said.
Noting that the LDF would go to any length to remove the Governor from his position as Chancellor, the Marxist veteran also stated that Khan’s refusal to speak to a section of the media cannot be accepted.
It was ‘fascist,’ he added, and such a dictatorial stance was an attempt to humiliate the state and its people.
Khan, who is at odds with the Left government on a number of issues, claimed on Monday that a system of “oligarchy” exists in the CPI(M)-ruled state, as evidenced by the appointment of party cadres to government positions.
During the ongoing squabble between the Raj Bhavan and the Left government over a variety of issues, including Vice-Chancellor appointments, Khan claimed he was “threatened of dire consequences” by Left-wing activists.
