Wayanad, 31st July. A series of devastating landslides in the northern Kerala district of Wayanad has claimed the lives of around 132 people and left over 200 injured, with the death toll expected to rise as rescuers continue to search through the debris, official sources reported on Wednesday.
The landslides, which struck the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas, have also left over 180 people missing and completely destroyed more than 300 houses.
Rescue operations are underway with teams from the Army, Navy, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) working together to locate survivors and recover bodies. These teams are methodically unearthing debris and breaking into the remains of houses that were either destroyed or buried under mud.
The landslides occurred between 2 am and 4:10 am on Tuesday, catching many residents off-guard while they were sleeping, resulting in the high number of casualties.
According to figures released late Tuesday night by the Wayanad district administration, around 30 body parts were recovered from the Nilmabur and Meppadi areas.
Triggered by torrential rains, the landslides have wreaked havoc in the picturesque hamlets of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, leaving behind a trail of death, destruction, and despair.
