Mumbai: Mumbai Police have summoned stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for questioning on Monday over his controversial remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kamra had requested a week’s time, citing threats to his life, but police denied the request, sources said.
Kamra faces multiple charges, including defamation and statements conducing to public mischief, after a video of his show at Mumbai’s Habitat studio went viral. In the act, he sang a parody of the Bollywood song Bholi Si Surat, referring to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) over his 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, which split Shiv Sena. Following the video’s release, Shinde’s supporters vandalized the comedy venue in Khar. The next day, civic officials demolished parts of the studio, citing building violations.
Kamra condemned the attack, stating that targeting a venue for a comedian’s words was senseless. He also questioned whether the law would be applied equally against those responsible for the vandalism. Despite threats from Shinde’s supporters, Kamra said he would not hide and was ready to cooperate with authorities.
The controversy has sparked a political row, with Shinde alleging that Kamra acted at the Opposition’s behest, while Uddhav Thackeray defended the comedian, reiterating the “gaddar” jibe against Shinde.
