New Delhi, 23rd Dec. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Modi-led government on Farmers’ Day, accusing it of being “stubborn and anti-farmer” and urging it to fulfill its promises to the agricultural community.

Marking the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, celebrated as Farmers’ Day, Kharge took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns. “Farmer is India, the pride of the country. Warm wishes to all farmer sisters and brothers, and farm labourers on Farmers’ Day. Respectful tributes to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh ji, who fought for the farmers of the country,” he wrote.

Targeting the government, he added, “It is hoped that the Modi government will not do further injustice to our farmers through its stubbornness and anti-farmer policies and will implement its old promises.”

The Centre, however, defended its track record, highlighting its farmer-centric initiatives. In a statement on Sunday, the government pointed to schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), and Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana (PM-KMY) as evidence of its commitment to farmers’ welfare.

“These programmes aim to provide financial security, risk mitigation, and long-term social security for farmers while fostering sustainable agricultural growth,” the statement read, emphasizing that these efforts address both immediate and long-term needs of the agricultural community.

Earlier in the day, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and others paid rich tributes to Chaudhary Charan Singh. At a ceremony at Kisan Ghat in Delhi, the Vice President praised the former Prime Minister’s contributions to rural development and farmers’ welfare.

Union Minister and RLD Chief Jayant Chaudhary, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson, was also present at the event. Speaking on the occasion, Dhankhar remarked, “In 2001, the right decision was taken to honor a great leader who dedicated his life to farmers and rural progress. His philosophy remains an inspiration for all of us.”

As the debate over farmers’ welfare continues, both the Congress and the BJP have sought to position themselves as champions of the agricultural community, reflecting the critical role farmers play in India’s socio-economic landscape.
