Kanpur, 5th July. Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday arrested the key accused in the June 3 Kanpur violence, which erupted during a protest against BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s controversial statement against Prophet Mohammed.
Haji Wasi, accused of funding the violence, was apprehended near Lucknow’s Amausi airport while attempting to flee, according to a senior police official.
Wasi’s eldest son, Abdur Rahman, was also arrested in this case on Monday.
With these arrests, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to 61.
Anand Prakash Tiwari, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), stated that Wasi’s location was found in and around Lucknow.
Following Wasi’s location, he was arrested near Amausi airport, he added.
“The accused has been taken to Kanpur and is being questioned. He will be produced before court and further action will be taken in accordance with the court’s directives,” the officer noted.
Wasi, he said, is a history-sheeter, and four criminal cases have been filed against him.
The Special Investigation Team had previously obtained a non-bailable warrant (NBW) from the Metropolitan Magistrate-VI court against him and up to 18 other defendants in the case.
Following the violence, the Kanpur administration demolished one of Wasi’s buildings.
On June 3, Kanpur witnessed violent clashes followed by stone-pelting after a local Muslim organisation, the Maulana Mohammad Ali (MMA) Jauhar Fans Association, called for the closure of shops across the city in response to Nupur Sharma’s controversial comments.
