Nagpur, Maharashtra, 14th Nov: Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar has stirred a major controversy with his remarks targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ wife, Amruta Fadnavis. The comments, made during a public rally in Nagpur on Wednesday, have drawn strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Kanhaiya Kumar took aim at Fadnavis’ “Dharamyudh” (religious war) remark, saying that while it is everyone’s duty to protect religion, it should not be reduced to a mere political slogan. He said, “It can’t be like we save religion and the Deputy Chief Minister’s wife makes reels on Instagram. Everyone will save religion together.”

The former JNU student leader further criticized Fadnavis’ call for a “Dharamyudh” to counter “Vote-Jihad,” suggesting that the responsibility of protecting religion should not be left to the public while the children of political leaders enjoy privileges, such as studying at prestigious universities. “Will your children join us in this fight to save religion?” Kanhaiya questioned.

The BJP swiftly condemned Kanhaiya’s remarks, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accusing the Congress leader of insulting Amruta Fadnavis and, by extension, all Marathi women. “How dare you insult a daughter of Maharashtra? Amruta Fadnavis’ insult is an insult to every Marathi woman,” Poonawalla said in a post on X, using harsh words to describe Kanhaiya’s comments as “disrespectful” and “unacceptable.”

Kanhaiya’s comments came after Devendra Fadnavis’ speech last week, in which he referred to the upcoming elections as a “Dharamyudh” to fight against “Vote-Jihad.” The remarks are seen as part of the heated political discourse in Maharashtra as the state prepares for its assembly elections on November 20.

The ongoing political campaign for the 288 assembly seats has intensified, with both the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) competing fiercely for voter support. The election results will be declared on November 23. In the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, while Shiv Sena secured 56 and Congress 44. The MVA performed strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning 30 of the 48 seats, while Mahayuti secured only 17.
