New Delhi, 3rd Oct. Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut ignited a fresh controversy on Wednesday with a social media post about Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
On Shastri’s 120th birth anniversary, Ranaut appeared to downplay Gandhi’s role as the “Father of the Nation” in her Instagram post, stating, “Desh ke pita nahi, desh ke to lal hote hai. Dhanye hai Bharat ma ke ye lal” (The country does not have fathers; it has sons. Blessed are these sons of Mother India).
Ranaut, a BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuing Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of cleanliness in a follow-up post.
Her comments, however, triggered criticism, with Congress leader Supriya Shrinate condemning her for the “lewd jibe” at Mahatma Gandhi. Shrinate posted on X (formerly Twitter), questioning whether PM Modi would address Ranaut’s remarks.
BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia also condemned the actor-politician’s comments, urging her to refrain from making controversial statements that harm the party. This latest incident follows previous controversies, including Ranaut’s comments advocating for the return of the three farm laws repealed in 2021.
