Hyderabad, 27th August. K Kavitha, the Telangana politician jailed since March over alleged corruption and money laundering charges related to the Delhi liquor policy case, was released from jail on Tuesday evening after the Supreme Court granted her conditional bail.
As Kavitha, a leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), stepped out of the prison complex, BRS workers and supporters celebrated by playing drums and bursting crackers. Her brother and BRS working president, KT Rama Rao, was also present to greet her.
In her first comments after being released, Kavitha said, “We are fighters, we will fight it out legally and politically. They have only made the BRS and KCR’s team unbreakable,” expressing her resolve to challenge the charges against her.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court stated that Kavitha’s custody was no longer required as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had completed their investigations. The court directed her release on bail, with a bond of ₹10 lakh required for each of the cases against her.
The court also sharply criticized the two central agencies for the “fairness” of their investigation, questioning their discretion in choosing whom to accuse. “The prosecution has to be fair. You can’t pick and choose anyone,” the bench observed.
Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, representing Kavitha, argued that the investigation against her was complete, and that charge sheets and prosecution complaints had already been filed. He also referenced the recent Supreme Court decision granting bail to co-accused and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia in the same case.
Kavitha was arrested by the ED from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on March 15, followed by her arrest by the CBI from Tihar Jail on April 11.
