Jaipur, 16th Nov. Journalists in Rajasthan have called on the state government to enact a law ensuring their safety after two media professionals from PTI were attacked in Tonk. The incident involved video reporter Ajeet Singh Shekhawat and cameraman Dharmendra Kumar, who were assaulted by a mob while covering protests. Their equipment, including a camera, was damaged during the attack.

The Pink City Press Club convened a meeting in Jaipur on Saturday, condemning the assault and reiterating their demand for a journalist protection act. Club president Veerendra Rathore voiced concerns about repeated attacks on media personnel, emphasizing the need for unity in the profession.

“We have seen numerous instances of violence against journalists during protests and agitations. This must stop. A protection act is crucial for ensuring our safety while performing our duties,” Rathore stated.

General Secretary Yogendra Panchauli suggested forming a government-journalist committee to draft a comprehensive bill. He proposed provisions to safeguard journalists’ safety and their equipment, with strict penalties for perpetrators of violence.

Former club president L. L. Sharma highlighted the need for collective action. “Media, as the fourth pillar of democracy, often becomes a soft target. We require a secure and fearless environment to perform our responsibilities,” he said.

The meeting concluded with plans to submit representations to central and state leaders, urging immediate legislative action.
