Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, a significant milestone aimed at boosting connectivity and tourism in the region. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi expressed his delight in being with the people of Sonamarg and emphasized how this project will transform the region’s infrastructure, improving access to previously inaccessible areas.

Boosting Connectivity and Tourism

The Sonamarg Tunnel is expected to significantly improve connectivity, easing travel for locals and tourists alike, especially during harsh weather conditions like avalanches and heavy snowfall. The tunnel will ensure smoother access to Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh, while also improving transportation of essential supplies and access to medical facilities. The Prime Minister highlighted that this long-awaited infrastructure project fulfills a major demand from the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

PM Modi Lauds the Efforts of Workers

PM Modi thanked the workers who contributed to the construction of the tunnel, noting their dedication and sacrifice. He also condoled the loss of seven laborers during the construction. Reflecting on his personal connection to Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister recalled his early days when he often visited the region during his party work, sharing the warmth and hospitality of its people, despite the cold and snow.

A Special Day for the Nation

The Prime Minister acknowledged the festive atmosphere in the country, with several important festivals being celebrated, including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal. He expressed his best wishes to everyone celebrating these occasions. Furthermore, he praised the resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially during the harsh winter period of Chillaikalan, and emphasized the potential for the region’s tourism sector.

New Era of Development for Jammu and Kashmir

PM Modi also highlighted the government’s commitment to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. Over the past decade, the region has seen a surge in infrastructure development, including roads, railways, medical institutions, and educational facilities. He announced the laying of the foundation stone for the Jammu Rail Division, alongside several other ongoing projects. These developments will contribute to the region’s growth and help transform Jammu and Kashmir into a hub of connectivity, tourism, and economic prosperity.

Vision for a Developed India by 2047

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s vision for a developed India by 2047, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that no region or family is left behind. He pointed out that over 4 crore families across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, have benefited from permanent housing, with an additional 3 crore houses planned for the near future. He also underscored the government’s efforts in providing healthcare, with millions benefiting from free medical treatment, including those in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tourism as a Catalyst for Development

PM Modi observed that the tourism sector is a key driver of growth in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2024, over 2 crore tourists visited the region, with Sonamarg experiencing a sixfold increase in tourist footfall over the last decade. He emphasized that improved connectivity through projects like the Sonamarg Tunnel would attract more tourists to previously unexplored regions, further benefiting local businesses and creating new opportunities.

Sports, Youth Empowerment, and Job Creation

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s focus on sports, with events like the international marathon in Srinagar and the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg providing opportunities for local youth. The establishment of sports centers and educational institutions like AIIMS and IITs in Jammu and Kashmir are empowering the region’s youth and providing them with new career prospects.

A Transforming Kashmir

PM Modi praised the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir, noting how the region is regaining its identity as “Paradise on Earth.” He pointed out that local businesses, artists, and athletes are contributing to the vibrant culture of the region, making it an attractive destination for both tourists and investors.

In closing, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, expressing his desire for the region to become even more prosperous and beautiful. He assured the people that his government would continue to support their efforts to realize their dreams and contribute to the nation’s progress.

The event was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Omar Abdullah, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union Ministers of State Dr. Jitendra Singh and Ajay Tamta, along with other dignitaries.
