J&K Govt Appoints New SSPs for Key Districts Ahead of Assembly Polls

Jammu, 31st August. The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday night appointed four officers from the J&K Police Services (JKPS) as new Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) for the districts of Srinagar, Baramulla, and Kupwara, as well as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Handwara. This move follows approval from the Election Commission of India, which aims to ensure a fair electoral process ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the Union Territory.

An order issued by Principal Secretary Home, Chandrakar Bharti, detailed the transfer and new assignments for seven police officials, including two IPS officers. The officers have been reassigned across three districts and one police district, in compliance with the Election Commission’s directives.

The Election Commission, on Wednesday, instructed the transfer of senior police officials from Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Handwara, further requesting the administration to submit a panel of IPS officers for their replacement.

According to the order, JKPS officer Imtiyaz Hussain Mir has been appointed as SSP Srinagar, Mohammad Zaid as SSP Baramulla, Ghulam Jeelani Wani as SSP Kupwara, and Ifroz Ahmad as SP Handwara.

Additionally, IPS officers Gurinderpal Singh and Shobhit Saksena have been reassigned from their roles as SSPs of Baramulla and Kupwara districts to Incharge Director Police Telecommunications and SSP CID (Headquarters), respectively. Dawood Ayoub, the former SP of Handwara, has been appointed as SSP CID Headquarters.

The Election Commission’s directives, issued to the J&K Chief Secretary, emphasize the need for impartial law enforcement in the lead-up to the elections, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in the region.
