Jhansi Medical College NICU Fire: 10 Newborns Dead, Investigation Underway

GG News Bureau
Jhansi, 16th Nov.
A devastating fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi late Friday night, claiming the lives of at least 10 newborns and leaving several others injured. The incident has triggered widespread grief and an urgent investigation into the causes and safety measures at the facility.

Timeline of the Incident

The fire reportedly started around 10:45 pm, as confirmed by District Magistrate Avinash Kumar. The most critically ill newborns, admitted in the interior section of the NICU, were trapped as the flames spread rapidly.

Cause of the Fire

Initial investigations suggest that a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator might have caused the fire, which quickly engulfed the oxygen-rich neonatal ward. Chief Medical Superintendent Sachin Mahor stated that the highly oxygenated environment contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze, hampering immediate evacuation efforts.

Casualties and Rescues

Out of the 54 infants present in the NICU at the time of the fire, 35 were rescued. The injured babies are receiving treatment, while efforts are being made to identify the deceased. DNA tests may be conducted to confirm the identities of three of the 10 deceased newborns.

Investigation and Accountability

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak announced a multi-departmental investigation to determine the cause of the fire and identify any lapses in safety protocols. He assured stringent action against those found responsible for negligence.

Pathak has directed the local administration to submit a detailed report within 24 hours. Preliminary findings indicate inadequate fire safety measures, including insufficient fire prevention equipment at the hospital.

Condolences and National Outcry

The tragedy has drawn condolences from leaders across the nation.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking” and extended prayers for the bereaved families.
  • President Droupadi Murmu described the accident as “extremely heartbreaking,” offering strength to the families and wishing for the recovery of the injured.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief and directed district officials to expedite relief and rescue efforts.

BJP MLA Rajeev Singh Parichha assured that injured newborns are receiving the best possible treatment, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families.
