New Delhi— The upcoming visit of US Vice President JD Vance to India from April 21 to 24 is expected to mark a pivotal moment in strengthening the India-US strategic partnership, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.
Addressing a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that all relevant bilateral issues, including tariffs and trade agreements, will be discussed during Vance’s official engagements in India. “We have a comprehensive strategic global partnership. When you have that level of engagement, you discuss everything that matters,” he stated.
The visit is Vice President Vance’s first official trip to India, and he will be accompanied by Second Lady Usha Vance, their children, and senior members of the US administration. A key highlight of the tour will be his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 21.
Key Focus Areas: Trade, Tariffs, Strategic Cooperation
India and the US are reportedly in active discussions on a bilateral trade agreement, Jaiswal noted. “We are in talks with the US side so that a trade agreement can be done. We are very positive that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties,” he added.
Although Jaiswal did not confirm specific discussions on tariff issues, he reiterated that comprehensive trade and economic matters will be on the table, given the depth of the current partnership.
Wider Diplomatic Context: US-Iran Talks Welcomed
In a separate remark, the MEA also welcomed the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran, calling them a step in the right direction. “We see the US-Iran talks as a positive development. India has always stood for dialogue and diplomacy,” Jaiswal said.
Cultural Diplomacy on the Cards
Beyond political discussions, Vice President Vance and his delegation are scheduled to visit Jaipur and Agra, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage. These visits are expected to reflect the growing people-to-people and cultural ties between the two democracies.
The Vance visit comes at a time when India and the US are intensifying cooperation across sectors — from defense and climate change to emerging technologies and education — reaffirming their shared commitment to global peace, prosperity, and democratic values.
