Jalandhar, 13th May. The AAP has won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, which has been a Congress stronghold for decades, by a margin of 58,691 votes.
Sushil Rinku, an AAP candidate who switched parties just days before the election, is now the new MP of Jalandhar.
The Congress finished second, with the SAD and BJP finishing third and fourth, respectively.
The AAP has won by a significant margin in the constituency, holding a lead over the Congress in every round of voting.
The Jalandhar reserved seat has long been a Congress stronghold, held by towering Dalit leaders of the Congress.
In 2009, Congress leader Mohinder Singh Kaypee won the seat. Santokh Singh Chaudhary, the Congress leader, won both the 2014 and 2019 elections.
In the past five decades, the Congress has lost the seat only four times.
Interestingly, despite a strong AAP wave in the state, the Congress’ five out of nine candidates won in the Jalandhar assembly constituencies in 2022.
The byelection was necessitated by the death of Congress MP Santokh Chaudhary, who died unexpectedly during the Bharat Jodo Yatra earlier this year.
