Tokyo, 7th March. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, currently on a three-day visit to Japan from March 6-8, lauded India’s remarkable growth trajectory during his participation in the first Raisina Roundtable in Tokyo today.
Highlighting India’s rapid transformation, Jaishankar emphasized the importance for Japan to recognize the significant pace of change in India. He outlined key developmental achievements, including the construction of 28 kilometers of highways daily, establishment of eight new airports annually, and the consistent development of metro networks and educational institutions over the past decade.
Asserting India’s enhanced credibility and efficacy as a global partner, Jaishankar underscored the nation’s notable advancements in various spheres, such as ease of doing business, digital innovation, and international agenda setting.
In discussing regional connectivity initiatives, Jaishankar highlighted major corridor projects, including the India Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMAC) and the international north-south transport corridor, aimed at linking the Atlantic to the Pacific through Asia. He emphasized the shared vision of India and Japan for transparent and collaborative connectivity.
Addressing concerns regarding maritime safety and security, particularly in the Red Sea, Jaishankar emphasized the need to bolster defense capabilities for the benefit of the broader region, referencing recent attacks on commercial and military shipping by the Houthis.
Jaishankar’s visit to Japan coincides with the 16th India-Japan Foreign Minister’s Strategic Dialogue with his Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa. The discussions are expected to encompass bilateral, regional, and global issues, with a focus on fostering a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier today, Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining the overall balance in favor of freedom, openness, and a rules-based order, highlighting the significance of cooperation between India and Japan in supporting shared goals amidst evolving global dynamics.
