Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench on Monday held a hearing on a petition questioning the citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In a stern directive, the court asked the Central Government to submit a clear report on Gandhi’s citizenship status within ten days.
During the proceedings, the court directly questioned the government, asking, “Is Rahul Gandhi an Indian citizen or not?” It also observed that the issue is of national importance and should not be delayed. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 5.
The petition challenges Gandhi’s Indian citizenship and, by extension, his Lok Sabha membership. The petitioner has alleged that Gandhi’s citizenship is “doubtful,” which could potentially jeopardize his position as a Member of Parliament.
In Monday’s hearing, the Centre submitted a status report. However, the court found it incomplete and instructed the government to file a more comprehensive and conclusive response.
Taking the matter seriously, the High Court emphasized the need for a fact-based reply from the Centre, underlining that the issue holds significance at the national level.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has dismissed the petition as a politically motivated move. Calling it a “conspiracy,” the party said it is an attempt to weaken the Opposition ahead of upcoming elections.
“This is nothing but a deliberate strategy to target Rahul Gandhi and divert public attention. It’s a political witch-hunt,” said a senior Congress leader.
The court’s directive has now put the onus on the Central Government to provide clarity on an issue that could have wide political ramifications.
