Mumbai, 2nd May. With the countdown to the parliamentary elections ticking away, Mumbai finds itself at the epicenter of a political showdown, notably witnessing clashes within the Shiv Sena itself. Among the six parliamentary constituencies in Mumbai, three are poised to witness intense contests between factions led by Eknath Shinde and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.
In a unique twist, traditional rivalries between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress will unfold in two seats, while one constituency will witness a direct face-off between the Shiv Sena and BJP.
The six constituencies in Mumbai—Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai North-East, and Mumbai North-West—are set to be hotbeds of political activity, with 13 seats in Maharashtra heading to the polls in the final phase on May 20.
In Mumbai South, incumbent MP Arvind Sawant, representing the Uddhav Thackeray faction, will face off against Yamini Jadhav from the Shinde-led Sena, marking a significant intra-party clash.
Similarly, in Mumbai South-Central, Sena (UBT) leader Anil Desai will compete against Rahul Shewale, the sitting Lok Sabha member representing the Shinde-led Sena.
The Mumbai North-West constituency will witness a gripping contest between Amol Kirtikar of the Thackeray faction and Ravindra Waikar, who recently joined the Shinde camp from the ruling Sena.
In addition to these intra-party battles, traditional political rivals will vie for supremacy in other constituencies. Notable among these are Congress MLA Varsha Gaikwad, the Mumbai unit president, who will face off against BJP’s noted lawyer Ujjwal Nikam in Mumbai North-Central. Meanwhile, Union minister and BJP stalwart Piyush Goyal will contest against Bhushan Patil of the Congress in Mumbai North.
The electoral landscape in Mumbai reflects the shifting dynamics within the political arena, with alliances and realignments shaping the contours of the contest. The Mumbai electorate, comprising over 24 lakh voters in the city and 74 lakh voters in the suburban region, holds the key to the outcome of these fiercely contested battles.
