Guwahati- On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assam Pradesh Mahila Morcha and Guwahati City Mahila Morcha organized a grand celebration at Kar bhawan in Guwahati on 8th March. The event, which was held to honor the contributions of women in various fields, saw an impressive turnout of distinguished guests, respected women achievers, and politicians.
The chief guest of the event was Dr. Nilima Bhawati, a retired professor from Gauhati University. In her address, Dr. Bhawati emphasized the importance of celebrating women, recognizing them as the pillars of power in society. “Women have always been the cornerstone of progress, and today we celebrate their strength, resilience, and contributions to our communities,” Dr. Bhawati said, inspiring all those present.
The event also saw a special address by Assam’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ajanta Neog, who spoke passionately about women’s economic empowerment. She highlighted the role of women in driving economic growth and mentioned various government initiatives aimed at empowering them. Dr. Neog specifically focused on the Arunoday scheme, an initiative by the Assam government that aims to turn the dreams of women into reality. She hailed it as an ideal platform to help women progress alongside the rest of the nation. “The Arunoday scheme is a critical step towards ensuring that women have the support and resources they need to succeed,” said Dr. Neog.
The gathering included numerous respected women who have excelled in various fields. They were invited and felicitated for their contributions to society, culture, sports, and healthcare. Among the honorees were Padmashri Parvati Bora, Dhandaa Pathak a renowned folk artist from Assam,Juri Deka a distinguished sportswoman, Akshata Narayan a celebrated entrepreneur,Anamika Doley Saikia a handicraft artist , Dr. Uma Kaimal Saikia a well-known medical professional from the Guwahati Medical College, was also felicitated.
Another prominent felicitation took place for Dr. Manju Devi Pegu, a highly respected figure in the field of literature. The women were honored by Dilip Saikia, the Chief of BJP Assam Pradesh. The felicitation ceremony was a highlight of the event, acknowledging the significant achievements of women in various sectors.
The program was conducted by Swapna Baniya, the Chief of Assam Pradesh Mahila Morcha, who ensured the event ran smoothly. Baniya, in her speech, praised the women achievers and emphasized the importance of women taking leadership roles in every aspect of life. She also highlighted how the BJP-led government has worked towards improving the lives of women through policies and schemes aimed at their welfare.
The event was graced by several distinguished political leaders, including the Lok Sabha MP from Guwahati, Bijuli Kalita, who spoke about the ongoing efforts of the government to promote gender equality and women’s rights. Kalita emphasized the need for more women to participate in politics and governance, saying, “Women need to actively engage in shaping the future of our country.”
Ex-Central Minister Bijoya Chakrabarty also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the progress made by women over the years, while also urging for more to be done to ensure equal opportunities for women across all sectors.
Additionally, Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Queen Oja was present at the event and delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the importance of women’s participation in nation-building. She stressed the need for breaking barriers in gender discrimination and ensuring that women are given equal space in all walks of life.
The event was not only a celebration of women’s achievements but also a call for greater gender equality and empowerment. It served as a reminder of the ongoing work that needs to be done to support women in every aspect of life, from education to healthcare to political representation.
