New Delhi, 5th Dec. Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, President of the International Council of Jurists, has penned a formal letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, urging him to retract comments made in the presidential pardon letter for his son, Hunter Biden. Dr. Aggarwala expressed concern over Biden’s assertion that “raw politics” has influenced the U.S. justice system, emphasizing the potential impact such statements could have on public trust in judicial institutions globally.
Dr. Aggarwala acknowledged the constitutional authority vested in the President of the United States to grant pardons but took exception to the implications made in Biden’s remarks. He pointed out that the claim of political interference lacked supporting evidence and could undermine the dignity and independence of the judiciary.
“An incumbent President must exercise caution when making statements about the justice system to ensure that its authority and public trust remain intact,” wrote Dr. Aggarwala. He further highlighted the global repercussions of such comments, stressing that the justice system serves as a cornerstone of democracy and must remain insulated from political narratives.
The letter also acknowledged the political circumstances surrounding Hunter Biden’s pardon but underscored the importance of maintaining respect for judicial institutions. Dr. Aggarwala reminded the U.S. President that while political disputes are transient, the justice system is an enduring institution central to public faith and governance.
Dr. Aggarwala concluded his appeal by respectfully requesting President Biden to withdraw the remarks from the pardon letter, emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the justice system.
The International Council of Jurists’ statement comes at a critical time, reinforcing the importance of judicial independence and the global impact of the United States’ approach to justice.
