“India’s Tax System Among the Most Transparent Globally”: Om Birla

New Delhi, 4th Dec. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday lauded India’s taxation system as one of the most transparent and reliable in the world while addressing officer trainees of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and Royal Bhutan Customs at an event organized by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) in the Parliament House complex.

Birla emphasized that India’s stable and transparent tax policies have made it a global favorite for investment. Highlighting the Goods and Services Tax (GST), he called it a transformative reform introducing the “One Nation, One Tax” principle, simplifying taxation, and enhancing ease of doing business.

Addressing 73 officer trainees from the 74th and 75th IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) batches and five trainees from Royal Bhutan Customs, Birla credited the officers for contributing to India’s robust economic growth. He underscored that India’s budget has grown from ₹170 crores in 1947 to over ₹40 lakh crores today due to their dedicated efforts.

Reflecting on India’s democratic values, Shri Birla remarked that the Constitution has united a diverse population and guided the nation’s progress. He emphasized the role of Parliament in welfare initiatives, constitutional amendments, and creating a robust legislative framework over the past 75 years.

The Speaker led the officers in reading the Preamble to the Constitution and urged them to uphold transparency, honesty, and efficiency in their roles. He expressed confidence that their technical expertise and diligence would enhance revenue collection and strengthen ethical governance.

The event also featured addresses by Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh and Principal Director General of NACIN Gaigongdin Panmei, with Joint Secretary Gaurav Goyal delivering the vote of thanks.

This appreciation course is expected to deepen the officers’ understanding of parliamentary processes, equipping them to serve the nation with greater impact.
