Thiruvananthapuram, 5th April. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar rejected a recent statement by a senior United Nations official regarding elections in India, stating that he doesn’t need the global body to remind him that elections in the country should be conducted freely and fairly.
His response was prompted by a question about a comment made by a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, expressing hope that in India, people’s political and civil rights are safeguarded and that everyone can vote in a free and fair environment.
Jaishankar, who was in town to support his ministerial colleague and BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar in the Lok Sabha polls, also mentioned that the UN official’s remark on Indian elections was made in response to a biased question during a press briefing at the UN.
“I don’t need the United Nations to tell me that our elections should be free and fair. I trust the people of India. They will ensure that the elections are conducted in a fair manner. So, there’s no need to worry,” the minister told reporters during an interaction.
Last week, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, was asked about the political turmoil in India ahead of the upcoming national elections following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the opposition Congress’ bank accounts.
“We hope that in India, like in any country holding elections, everyone’s rights, including political and civil rights, are protected, and that everyone can vote in a free and fair atmosphere,” Dujarric had stated.
