New Delhi, 8th March.
India’s coal production has achieved a historic milestone, surpassing 900 million tons (MT) as of March 6, 2024, setting the stage for approaching the ambitious target of 1 billion tons (BT) by March 31, 2024.

Notably, during the fiscal year 2023-24, India has exceeded last year’s coal production of 893.19 MT, accomplishing this feat twenty-seven days ahead of schedule.

Furthermore, coal companies maintain ample coal stock of around 85 MT, with domestic coal-based thermal power plants holding coal reserves of 43.28 MT as of March 5, 2024.

This surplus ensures uninterrupted power supply nationwide, meeting escalating electricity demand, particularly during peak consumption periods and promoting stability in the energy sector, thereby supporting economic growth.

India’s achievement in surpassing 900 MT in coal production enhances the country’s energy security and reduces reliance on coal imports, leading to substantial forex savings.

Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Atma Nirbhar Bharat,” the Ministry of Coal has undertaken relentless efforts and strategic initiatives to propel India’s journey towards sustainable development and self-reliance in the energy domain.
