New Delhi, 3rd Jan. Indian Railways, through its sports wing, the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), continues to make significant contributions to India’s sporting landscape. With a legacy dating back to 1928, the RSPB has expanded its role, promoting sports across the nation. Starting with a focus on disciplines like hockey, athletics, and tennis, RSPB now supports 29 sports, including 18 individual and 11 team games. The board is affiliated with 28 national sports federations and is a member of the World Railways Sports Association (USIC).
As of now, over 9,000 athletes are part of Indian Railways, with around 3,000 actively competing in various disciplines. The performance of these athletes on international platforms has been exceptional, contributing to India’s growing sports ecosystem.
In recognition of their achievements, five Indian Railways athletes have been selected for the prestigious Arjuna Award for 2024. These athletes have excelled in their respective sports, and their recognition underscores Indian Railways’ pivotal role in fostering sporting talent in the country. The awardees are:
- Ms. Jyothi Yarraji, South Central Railway (Athletics – 100m Hurdles)
- Ms. Annu Rani, North Western Railway (Athletics – Javelin Throw)
- Ms. Salima Tete, South Eastern Railway (Hockey)
- Sh. Swapnil Suresh Kusale, Central Railway (Shooting – 50m 3P)
- Sh. Aman, Northern Railway (Wrestling – 57kg Freestyle)
These five athletes will receive their Arjuna Awards at a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17th January 2025, in the presence of the President of India.
Indian Railways takes immense pride in these accomplishments. With a total of 183 Arjuna Awards, 28 Padma Shris, 12 Dhyan Chand Awards, 13 Dronacharya Awards, and 9 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards, it stands as the organization with the highest number of national sports accolades. Indian Railways congratulates its athletes and wishes them continued success in their sporting careers.
