Tinsukia, 9th August. Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh announced on Thursday that all Indian passport holders will be permitted to return from Bangladesh through designated entry points in the state. Singh emphasized that non-Indians will be strictly barred from sneaking into India.
Addressing reporters after a law and order review meeting, Singh assured that Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) are committed to preventing any unauthorized entry into the state. “Our direction is clear: no illegal entry will be tolerated. We are vigilant and will act according to the law against any attempts to breach our borders,” he stated.
Singh noted that during recent disturbances in Bangladesh, 78 students returned to India, with 60 from Assam and 18 from other regions. He reiterated that Indian passport holders from Bangladesh will be facilitated to return, but no entry will be allowed to others.
The Assam border with Bangladesh spans 267.5 km, including districts such as Karimganj, Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar. The Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Karimganj, along with two others in Meghalaya and Tripura, plays a crucial role in border security.
Singh highlighted the ongoing measures to monitor the situation, mentioning recent video conferences with the BSF, Union Home Secretary, and other officials. “We have been actively coordinating with the BSF and local police to ensure border security and manage the situation effectively,” he said.
The security review also focused on the presence of the ULFA(I) group in the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh region. Singh emphasized the need for heightened vigilance to thwart any potential subversive activities by the group. “We are taking all necessary actions to prevent any disruption and maintain peace in Assam,” he added.
Singh also expressed his concern over the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh, which saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign amid widespread student protests. The violence has resulted in over 500 fatalities, including police personnel.
In conclusion, Singh urged the ULFA(I) to refrain from violent activities and resolve grievances through dialogue with the government. He reassured that all security forces, including the Assam Police, Army, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), are on high alert to protect the state and its citizens.
