Wayanad, 4th August.
The Indian Navy is steadfastly continuing rescue and relief operations in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad district, despite facing inclement weather and challenging terrain. Additional personnel, resources, and essential supplies were mobilized from INS Zamorin to support the local community impacted by the disaster. Currently, 78 Naval personnel are involved in the ongoing rescue operations.

Teams have been deployed in multiple locations, including Chooralmala and Mundakkai areas, working closely with disaster relief forces and the local administration. One team has been stationed at the river base to ensure the continuous supply of materials, food, and provisions to the affected people. Other teams are engaged in searching for survivors, clearing debris, and recovering bodies. A medical post has been established at Chooralmala to provide medical assistance to the injured.

In a significant effort to restore connectivity, a team comprising three officers and 30 sailors assisted the Indian Army in assembling and constructing a crucial Bailey Bridge over the river, connecting the regions of Chooralmala and Mundakkai, which had been isolated by landslides on August 1, 2024. The bridge serves as a vital logistics support route, enabling the movement of heavy machinery and ambulances.

On August 2, 2024, an Indian Navy Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from INS Garuda conducted aerial reconnaissance of the affected areas to search for survivors and locate bodies. The helicopter airlifted 12 state police personnel, along with rescue equipment, to the disaster area, which was inaccessible by road. The sortie was conducted over the hilly terrain in low visibility and challenging weather conditions.

The Indian Navy is working closely with the local administration to ensure the quick evacuation of stranded people and the provision of basic amenities and medical aid.
