New Delhi, 2nd March.
Four units of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are set to be honored with the prestigious ‘President’s Standard and Colours’ in a historic ceremony at the Hindon airbase on March 8.

President Droupadi Murmu will confer the President’s Standard to 45 Squadron and 221 Squadron, while awarding the President’s Colours to 11 Base Repair Depot and 509 Signal Unit, as announced by the defense ministry.

This event marks a historic occasion in the annals of the IAF, being the first time that four units will receive the esteemed President’s Standard and Colours simultaneously. The recognition is considered the highest military honor bestowed upon any armed forces unit, symbolizing their exceptional contributions to the nation.

Among the distinguished units, the 221 Squadron, known as the ‘Valiants’, boasts a rich legacy dating back to its establishment in 1963. Renowned for its prowess, the squadron played a pivotal role in various conflicts, including the 1965 Indo-Pak war and the 1971 conflict, demonstrating remarkable valor and strategic acumen.

Similarly, the 45 Squadron, dubbed the ‘Flying Daggers’, has left an indelible mark on Indian military history since its inception in 1959. From participating in ‘Operation Vijay’ for the liberation of Goa to its instrumental role in defending Punjab and Rajasthan sectors during the 1971 war, the squadron exemplifies gallantry and resilience.

The 11 Base Repair Depot, established in 1974, stands as the premier fighter aircraft base repair facility of the IAF. Over the years, it has played a vital role in maintaining and overhauling various aircraft models, contributing significantly to the operational readiness of the air force.

Lastly, the 509 Signal Unit, operating as an Air Defence Direction Centre in Meghalaya, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding national airspace. Its contributions during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 underscore its commitment to national security and operational excellence.

The upcoming ceremony not only celebrates the distinguished heritage of these units but also reaffirms the IAF’s commitment to excellence and service to the nation.
