New Delhi, 23rd August. President Droupadi Murmu attended the inaugural National Space Day Celebration at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, today (August 23, 2024). National Space Day is being celebrated to mark the successful landing of the ‘Vikram’ Lander on the Moon’s surface on August 23, 2023.
During the event, the President presented awards to the winners of the ‘Robotics Challenge’ and the ‘Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon.’
In her address, the President praised ISRO’s remarkable journey and its significant achievements in the space sector. She highlighted ISRO’s invaluable contributions to India’s social and economic development, acknowledging the dedication of scientists who have elevated India’s Space Program among the world’s best, using minimal resources. She expressed confidence in the country’s continued progress in space science, setting new standards of excellence.
The President emphasized India’s extraordinary progress in the space sector, noting impressive feats such as the Mars mission with limited resources and the successful launch of over a hundred satellites simultaneously.
She also spoke on the broader impact of space exploration, which has enhanced human capabilities and turned imagination into reality. The research conducted to address challenges in space exploration has accelerated scientific development and improved human life across sectors, including health, medicine, transportation, security, energy, environment, and information technology.
The President highlighted the rapid increase in start-ups within the space sector since its opening to the private sector, which has spurred progress in space research and provided new opportunities for the youth to showcase and refine their talents. She cited the recent successful launch of a single-piece 3D printed semi-cryogenic engine-powered rocket by an Indian company as a notable achievement.
Finally, the President called for preparedness in addressing future challenges, such as space debris, which poses risks to space missions. She appreciated the ‘ISRO System for Safe & Sustainable Operations Management’ facility, which ensures the continuous progress of space research activities. She expressed her pleasure that India is moving towards making all its space missions debris-free by 2030.
