Singapore, 5th Sept. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong today at the Parliament House in Singapore, where he received a ceremonial welcome. The two leaders held discussions on advancing India-Singapore relations and announced the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This new partnership aims to enhance economic, security, and technological ties, aligning with India’s Act East Policy. The leaders emphasized the need to boost trade and investment flows, noting Singapore’s substantial USD 160 billion investment in India. They acknowledged the growth opportunities for Singaporean investors due to India’s expanding economy.
The meeting also covered ongoing cooperation in various sectors, including defense, maritime awareness, education, AI, fintech, and new technologies. Both leaders highlighted the importance of strengthening connectivity and accelerating green corridor projects.
They reviewed the outcomes of the 2nd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in Singapore in August 2024 and emphasized the need for action on pillars of cooperation such as advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalization, healthcare, skills development, and sustainability. The leaders particularly noted the potential for collaboration in semiconductors and emerging technologies.
In addition, Prime Minister Modi announced plans to open India’s first Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre in Singapore as part of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2025. The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including India-ASEAN relations and the Indo-Pacific vision.
The meeting concluded with the exchange of MoUs in semiconductors, digital technologies, skill development, and healthcare. Prime Minister Wong accepted an invitation to visit India, further solidifying the strengthened partnership between the two nations.
