New Delhi, 31st August. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war on Friday, emphasizing its support for any feasible and mutually acceptable solution to restore peace.
During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “The decision as to when and how to commence peace talks is the prerogative of the two parties to the conflict. As friends and partners, we would support any feasible and mutually acceptable solution or format that could restore peace.”
In response to queries about Indians stranded in Russia, Jaiswal confirmed that 15 Indians have been released and have returned to India. He added that the Indian Embassy continues to work with Russian authorities to facilitate the release of others who wish to return. “Our mission, our embassy, is in touch with Russian authorities, and we hope that those who want to return will be released soon,” Jaiswal said.
India has consistently advocated for constructive and solution-oriented engagement with all stakeholders to achieve a negotiated settlement to the conflict. This position aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine, where he met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s commitment to peace through dialogue.
Jaiswal noted that while India is willing to play a constructive role in peace efforts, the specifics of how and when peace talks should begin remain within the purview of the conflicting parties. He emphasized, “We have always advocated constructive, solution-oriented, and practical engagement with all stakeholders to achieve a negotiated settlement.”
Additionally, Jaiswal addressed the situation of Indian nationals stranded at São Paulo Airport, stating that the Indian Consulate in São Paulo is in contact with Brazilian authorities and is working to resolve the issue. “The consulate is in touch with the foreign office representative and has sought a meeting with local authorities. The stranded Indians are being taken care of with necessary provisions,” he assured.
At the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event on Africa, Jaiswal highlighted India’s historic and special relations with African nations, emphasizing efforts to strengthen ties and deepen economic partnerships. The recent 19th CII India-Africa Conclave in Delhi, attended by several African Vice Presidents and ministers, was noted as a significant boost to economic relations between India and Africa.
Jaiswal concluded by acknowledging the CII’s long-standing engagement with Africa and its role in facilitating business exchanges between Indian and African industries.
