New Delhi, 10th May: India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, halting all military actions on land, at sea, and in the air, effective from 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time (1700 hours IST) today. The agreement was announced by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at a press briefing on Saturday, following contact between the military establishments of both countries.
Foreign Secretary Misri stated that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart earlier this afternoon at 15:35 hours, and an understanding was reached to cease all military action from 1700 hours IST. He added that instructions have been issued by both sides to implement this agreement, and the Directors General of Military Operations are scheduled to talk again on May 12 at 1200 hours.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed the development, saying, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on the stoppage of firing and military action.” He reiterated India’s consistent firm stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, stating that the country will continue to maintain this position.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the ceasefire agreement, stating, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.” In line with the development, Pakistan has reportedly reopened its airspace on Saturday.
Adding a layer of complexity to the announcement, US President Donald Trump claimed that the ceasefire was mediated by the United States after a long night of talks. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he was “pleased to announce” the agreement mediated by the US and commended both countries for using “Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio further said that he and Vice President Vance had engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, over the past 48 hours, commending their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship.”

However, the provided text explicitly notes that India has not agreed to any talks in any third country, as might be implied by Rubio’s statement on US mediation.
The ceasefire comes after a period of heightened military activity, including India’s responses to repeated drone attacks from Pakistan and its major counter-terror action under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7, which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Days prior to the ceasefire announcement, Vice President Vance had publicly commented on the India-Pakistan conflict, stating it was “fundamentally none of our business” but urging de-escalation while ruling out US involvement in a “war.”
