Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC) Complex in New Delhi on Saturday.

Marking a significant event, this is the first time in 65 years that the conference has been held in India. The theme for this year’s conference is “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems,” focusing on addressing global agricultural challenges such as climate change, resource degradation, and rising production costs.

Addressing the conference, PM Modi welcomed delegates on behalf of India’s vast agricultural community, including 120 million farmers, over 30 million women farmers, 30 million fishermen, and 80 million livestock farmers.

He emphasized the enduring significance of science and logic in Indian agricultural traditions, noting the country’s robust system of agricultural education and research.

“The Indian agricultural tradition prioritizes science and logic, with a rich heritage spanning thousands of years,” PM Modi remarked. He highlighted India’s progress from a nation once concerned about food security to a food surplus country, now a major producer of various agricultural products including milk, pulses, and spices.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of India’s diverse agro-climatic zones and their relevance for global food security. He also addressed the role of small farmers, who he described as the cornerstone of India’s food security. “Small farmers are the biggest strength of India’s food security,” he said.

PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to global welfare, citing the country’s vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” and emphasizing a holistic approach to sustainable agriculture and food systems. He also discussed India’s focus on climate-resilient farming and technological advancements in agriculture, such as digital crop surveys and soil health cards.

The conference, organized by the International Association of Agricultural Economists, will run from August 2 to 7, 2024, and provides a platform for young researchers and professionals to present their work and foster global partnerships in agricultural research and policy.
