India Ensures Adequate DAP Supplies for Rabi 2024-25 Amid Global Challenges

The Government of India has taken significant steps to ensure the smooth availability of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) during the ongoing Rabi 2024-25 season, despite global challenges affecting supplies. In a concerted effort, the Department of Fertilizers, in coordination with the States, Railways, and Fertilizer Companies, has worked to address local availability issues and expedite the supply of DAP across the country.

In October and November 2024, over 17 lakh tons of DAP arrived at various ports and were dispatched to the States. This was further supplemented by approximately 6.50 lakh tons of domestic production. As a result, the total supply of imported and domestic DAP to the States in these two months has reached about 23 lakh tons, excluding the buffer stock already available in the States.

The availability of DAP has been significantly impacted by geopolitical factors such as reduced exports to India and the ongoing Red Sea crisis. This disruption led to the diversion of vessels carrying essential raw materials like Phosphoric Acid, increasing voyage times and causing supply chain delays. Despite these hurdles, the government’s timely intervention has ensured sufficient DAP supplies for agricultural needs.

In addition to DAP, the supply of NPKS fertilizers has also seen a notable increase. States like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have used 5 lakh tons more NPKS fertilizers than the previous Rabi season. Nationwide, the consumption of NPKS fertilizers has increased by 10 lakh tons compared to last year’s Rabi season.

As of now, the total availability of DAP stands at 34.81 lakh metric tons (LMT), while NPKS fertilizers have reached 55.14 LMT. The Government of India continues to take all necessary actions to resolve any local availability issues and ensure the timely supply of fertilizers to farmers, supporting agricultural productivity in the Rabi season.
