New Delhi: As Myanmar struggles with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, India has stepped up relief efforts under ‘Operation Brahma’. On Saturday, the country delivered 15 tonnes of aid and dispatched more supplies via air and sea, along with rescue teams.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, reaffirming India’s solidarity. “As a close friend and neighbour, India stands with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, and rescue teams are being dispatched swiftly,” Modi said on X.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that Indian naval ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of aid to Yangon. Additionally, an 80-member NDRF team has been deployed for rescue operations in Myanmar’s capital Nay Pyi Taw.
Earlier, a C-130J military aircraft transported relief supplies to Yangon, including tents, blankets, food, medicines, and power generators. More Indian Air Force flights carrying relief materials and 60 para-field ambulances are scheduled to depart soon.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake has caused widespread devastation, with Myanmar’s military-led government reporting over 1,000 deaths and 2,376 injuries. India’s rapid response highlights its commitment as a “First Responder” to humanitarian crises in the region.
