New Delhi, 31st May: India and Chile have moved a step closer to deepening their economic partnership as the first round of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) concluded in New Delhi this week.
Held from May 26 to 30, the negotiations saw senior officials and experts from both nations come together to lay the groundwork for what could be a transformative trade pact. The opening ceremony was led by India’s Commerce Secretary, Shri Sunil Barthwal, and Chile’s Ambassador to India, H.E. Juan Angulo.
Describing the agreement as a “gateway to stronger global value chains,” Shri Barthwal said CEPA would help boost employment and expand opportunities for businesses in both countries. Ambassador Angulo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the growing importance of India as a trade partner for Chile.
The high-level discussions follow the State Visit of Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font to India in April this year, during which both nations agreed to fast-track economic cooperation. President Boric had called India a “priority partner” and stressed the need to diversify and deepen trade ties.
A 17-member team from Chile, led by Chief Negotiator Pablo Urria, joined hands with their Indian counterparts, led by Joint Secretary Shri Vimal Anand, to engage in dialogue across a wide range of sectors. These included trade in goods and services, customs procedures, investment promotion, women’s economic empowerment, MSMEs, sustainable development, and strategic minerals.
One of the standout features of the talks was the emphasis on making the agreement inclusive and forward-looking. Officials discussed ways to support small businesses, empower women entrepreneurs, and encourage responsible and sustainable trade practices.
Looking ahead, both sides have agreed to meet again in July or August 2025, with virtual discussions planned in the interim to iron out pending issues and build momentum.
Once finalised, the CEPA is expected to open up new markets, streamline trade rules, and create more opportunities for exporters and investors in both nations.
As talks progress, the India-Chile CEPA is shaping up to be more than just a trade deal — it’s a step towards a more connected and resilient economic future.
