Belem, 20th Nov: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has called the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) an essential tool for equitable and scalable global climate action. Speaking at the 11th JCM Partner Countries’ Meeting on the sidelines of UNFCCC CoP30 in Belém, Brazil, he said the initiative will help advance low-carbon technologies and directly contribute to India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The session was chaired by Japan’s Environment Minister Hirotaka Ishihara, who informed that the JCM now includes 31 partner nations with over 280 climate mitigation projects aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Reaffirming India’s strong climate partnership with Japan, Yadav said the JCM provides a clear framework for governments and private entities to jointly mobilise finance, deploy advanced technologies and transparently account for emission reductions. He noted that the mechanism strengthens bilateral collaboration while supporting global climate goals.

The minister said India’s implementation framework is progressing quickly, with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency developing the Indian Carbon Market portal, which will include a dedicated module for JCM activities to ensure transparency and smooth project facilitation.

Highlighting future areas of cooperation, he said JCM projects are expected across priority sectors including renewable energy with storage, sustainable aviation fuel, compressed biogas, green hydrogen, green ammonia and best available technologies in steel, cement and chemical industries.

Yadav reiterated India’s commitment to deepen cooperation with Japan and other partner nations, stating that high-integrity cooperative mechanisms like the JCM can drive investment and technology transfer while strengthening Paris Agreement implementation.
