New Delhi, 1st June.
As the Lok Sabha elections near their conclusion, the INDIA bloc convenes a crucial strategy meeting at the Delhi residence of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. Notable leaders including Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh from the Aam Aadmi Party, Sitaram Yechury of CPM, and National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah have already arrived at the venue, showcasing a significant display of unity.

The absence of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is notable, attributed to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections’ final phase and the relief operations for Cyclone Remal in Bengal.

While the official agenda of the meeting is to strategize for smooth counting at state and district levels, sources suggest a primary focus on maintaining alliance cohesion. Congress leaders privately acknowledge the importance of unity, especially if the NDA secures a narrow victory margin. With expectations of the NDA reaching no more than 260-270 seats, just shy of the majority mark, unity becomes paramount.

Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav’s prediction of the NDA falling short of the majority mark by two seats further underscores the alliance’s commitment to stick together, regardless of the numerical outcome.

Ahead of the meeting, Kharge expressed confidence in a positive outcome, rallying party workers with a message of continued vigilance and determination. However, the Congress’s refusal to engage in post-exit poll discussions has drawn criticism from the BJP camp, who interpret it as an acknowledgment of impending defeat.

While the Congress defends its stance, deeming exit polls unnecessary given the imminent counting, the BJP interprets it as a tacit admission of defeat. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi concludes his meditation retreat in Tamil Nadu’s Kanniyakumari and prepares to return to Delhi, adding to the anticipation surrounding the election outcome.
