New Delhi, 20th Sept. India has achieved a significant milestone by securing Tier 1 status in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, as published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). With an impressive score of 98.49 out of 100, India now stands among ‘role-modelling’ countries, showcasing its commitment to enhancing cybersecurity practices globally.
Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Minister of Communications, praised this achievement as a “Proud Moment for Bharat.” He stated, “This stellar achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to cybersecurity and highlights the remarkable growth of India’s telecom sector.”
The GCI 2024 evaluates national efforts across five pillars: legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation. The comprehensive assessment consists of 83 questions covering 20 indicators and multiple sub-indicators, ensuring a thorough evaluation of each nation’s cybersecurity landscape.
India’s strong performance is a result of various government initiatives aimed at boosting cyber resilience and establishing robust cybersecurity standards. The legal framework is equipped to tackle cybercrime, while Sectoral Computer Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) provide technical support and incident reporting.
Education and awareness form the core of India’s cybersecurity strategy. Targeted campaigns and educational programs promote secure online practices across various sectors, while cybersecurity education is integrated into school curricula.
Incentives and grants foster skill development and innovation in India’s cybersecurity industry. Furthermore, international collaborations enhance capacity-building and information-sharing, solidifying India’s position as a global cybersecurity leader.
India’s ascent to Tier 1 in the GCI 2024 is a testament to the nation’s elevated cybersecurity commitments, setting a benchmark for others and reflecting the Government of India’s dedication to securing its digital landscape.
