New Delhi, 9th May: The Indian government today alleged that Pakistan deliberately kept its airspace open and allowed civilian aircraft to operate on Thursday while it simultaneously launched Turkish-made drones at Indian cities, effectively using the civilian planes as shields.
In a briefing this evening, the government stated that at least 300 to 400 Pakistani drones flew towards various targets across northern India, including civilian buildings, military installations, and religious structures. The government noted that even on Friday evening, civilian flights were observed on tracking websites in Pakistani airspace, while India’s side showed no air traffic.
India’s air defence network successfully intercepted a significant number of these drones. The government specified that Pakistan deployed Turkish-made Asisguard Songar armed drones in some areas, which were jammed or shot down by India’s defence systems.
Amidst the drone activity and ongoing hostilities, heavy shelling by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch tragically hit the house of two students from a convent school, resulting in their deaths.
Condemning the targeting of civilian and religious sites, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told reporters in Delhi today, “The targeting of temples, gurdwaras, convents is a new low by Pakistan.”
