The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for above-normal temperatures and increased heatwave days across most parts of India from April to June. The scorching summer is expected to bring severe heat stress, particularly in central, eastern, and northwestern regions.
Heatwaves to Intensify: IMD Alert
IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra cautioned that India will witness two to four more heatwave days than usual in many regions. Normally, India experiences four to seven heatwave days during this period, but this year, it could nearly double in some states.
Regions at High Risk:
– North & Northwest India: Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh
– Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra
– Eastern India: Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha
– Southern India: Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, northern Karnataka, Tamil Nadu
– Western India: Gujarat
April to Bring Early and Extreme Heat
In April, most parts of India will see above-normal temperatures, with only a few exceptions in extreme southern and northwestern regions. Minimum temperatures will also remain unusually high, adding to the discomfort.
Power Crisis Looms as Demand Surges
The soaring heat is expected to push electricity demand up by 9-10%, leading to possible power shortages. Last year, peak demand hit 250 GW on May 30, exceeding projections. Authorities warn of blackouts and water shortages if power grids come under stress.
IMD’s Warning: Prepare for Extreme Heat
IMD urges people to take immediate precautions:
- Avoid going out during peak heat hour
- Stay hydrated and wear light clothin
- Elderly, children, and those with health conditions must take extra car
- Monitor power and water supply issues in high-risk states
With summer conditions worsening due to climate change, authorities are on high alert, and citizens are advised to stay updated on IMD forecasts and follow government advisories to stay safe.
