“Illegal Migrants Must Be Identified and Deported”: Amit Shah Directs Delhi Police

New Delhi- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday instructed senior Delhi Police officials to adopt a clear and decisive legal approach in dealing with unauthorised migrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, in the national capital.

An ongoing audit is identifying colonies with a significant presence of illegal migrants, following which strict action will be taken against those facilitating their stay and helping them obtain false documents, a senior official disclosed.

Shah underscored that illegal migration poses a direct threat to national security and must be addressed with urgency. He directed authorities to ensure the identification and deportation of unauthorised occupants through a structured “top to bottom and bottom to top” approach.

“Strict action should be taken against the entire network enabling their stay,” Shah instructed, adding that Delhi residents should feel reassured by the government’s commitment to tackling illegal occupancy with an iron hand. Officials confirmed that orders regarding this matter have already been disseminated to police stations across the city.

Crackdown on Gangs and Crime Prevention
During the high-level meeting, which lasted over two hours, Shah also directed law enforcement agencies to intensify their crackdown on interstate gangs operating in the Delhi-NCR region. He emphasized that street crime significantly impacts public perception of safety and called for a ruthless approach against such criminal networks.

“Strict action will be taken against police stations and subdivisions that consistently underperform in controlling street crime,” Shah warned. Additionally, he instructed the formation of new security committees in JJ clusters to enhance the safety of women and children.

Speedy Disposal of Riot Cases and Traffic Management
To expedite the resolution of cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots, Shah asked the Delhi government to appoint special prosecutors. He also addressed the persistent traffic congestion in the capital, directing the Delhi Police to identify key bottlenecks and implement swift measures to alleviate jams.

“The Delhi Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary have been asked to come up with rapid deployments to ensure smooth traffic flow,” a Ministry of Home Affairs official stated.

Autonomy for Construction Approvals and Monsoon Preparedness
In a major policy shift, Shah announced that the Delhi Police’s approval will no longer be required for construction-related matters in the city. Additionally, the Delhi government has been tasked with preparing a Monsoon Action Plan to mitigate water-logging issues, identifying chronic problem areas in advance.

The meeting was attended by newly-elected Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, and other senior officials. Shah emphasized that the “double-engine government of Delhi” will now function with “double speed” to ensure a safer and more developed city.
